about

When I was growing up, there was still a huge stigma around mental health and what it meant to suffer from things like depression, anxiety and eating disorders (especially if you were male). You weren't allowed to talk about it, and you especially couldn't use the R-word. If you did you risked being labelled weak, or a victim. So, I kept things to myself as much as I could, quietly struggling, but it only got worse. It took years for me to undo the damage that was done, and for the longest time, I thought I was beyond repair. Dance Again is about how we, as a society, have been taught to avoid emotions, thinking it makes us stronger, lauding those who put up walls and pretend to feel nothing. But in reality, avoiding it only makes things worse and in more painful and unexpected ways. Real strength comes from facing and understanding who we really are, no matter what box people around us try to put us in. It's about breaking free from the constraints of societal bullshit. And the truth is that no matter how broken we think we are, there is always a way back.

lyrics

They don’t talk about it
Don’t even care about it
Acting like it just don’t mean a thing
Making moves around it
Dodge and dip about it
Sidestep your way through everything
I was born to see it
Breathe it in and bleed it
Got defeated before I could defend
I can’t seem to fight it
Maybe they were right
Take it back I just can’t play the game

Does it take away the pain

Should I try and hide it
Wrap it up in silence
Who would want to hear it anyway
Living on a ceiling
With a dirty feeling
Need to say the things I need to say
Getting sick of doubting
Diving in and drowning
Need a breath to slip under the waves
Can you hear me shouting
Screaming out and howling
Won't hold back I just can’t play the game
Does it take away the pain
Or does something need to change
Cause I can’t contain my rage
Never thought I’d dance again
Never thought I’d dance again
I just can’t play the game
Does it take away the pain
Or does something need to change
Cause I can’t contain my rage
Never thought I’d dance again
Never thought I’d dance again
